Jennifer Beals in Washington this week

Jennifer was a special speaker at this year’s Truth and Justice Summit hosted by Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN) on April 17th in Washington DC
The 2013 Summit on Military Sexual Violence drives the reform of Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs policies and provide opportunities to educate members of Congress.
Jennifer talked about ending sexual assault in the military and changing Veterans Affairs practices to better support survivors of military sexual trauma. She also spoke about her research for her role as Major Stone in the WIGS series Lauren
Jennifer encouraged military sexual assault survivors to share their stories, not take any bullshit on Capitol Hill, “to be courageous is to tell your life story with your whole heart, love is the shield, truth is the sword”

Jennifer also lobbied lawmakers to pass the Safe Chemicals Act. She met this week with leaders on Capitol Hill to press for legislation that would make chemicals used in common household items like cleaners and children’s products safer. She said: ’We look to our government to provide our basic rights of clean air and water and yet right in front of us, in things we may be exposed to everyday, like our couches, cleaning fluids, toys, makeup or synthetic playing fields lie toxic chemicals that have for the most part gone untested in their effect on human health’
Jennifer Beals at the Family Equality Awards Dinner

Jennifer attended the Family Equality Council LA Awards Dinner on Saturday Feb 9th at the Universal Studios’ Globe Theatre. This event is aimed at connecting the growing Los Angeles community of LGBT-headed families and supporters as well as advancing efforts to create equality for all families.
Presenters for the evening included Sean Hayes, star of NBC’s long-running hit Will & Grace; Andrew Rannells of NBC’s new hit show The New Normal; Darren Criss, star of Fox’s Glee; and comedian and actress Molly Shannon.
NBC Network was awarded for their support and efforts to advance equality for all families, NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt accepted the award for the NBC Network. Other honorees were Minnesota Vikings’ Chris Kluwe and Virginia Uribe, the founder of Project 10.

Jennifer Beals at the The Daily Beast/Newsweek Hero Summit

As previously reported, Jennifer is attending the first ever Hero Summit in Washington DC, 14-15 November.
The goal of the summit is to bring together military heroes and exceptional civilians for meaningful dialogues and information-sharing.
Jennifer said that she was there to do “research” for a TV show in development about the military (Laughter Unlimited).
She also said she thought she might learn something by heading to the summit. She explained the night was a way of “researching your own history, your own country’s history, and try to understand what people have been through and how they’ve had to expand beyond themselves to become helpful to others.”

Jennifer Beals receives Ally for Equality Award

Jennifer picked up the Human Rights Campaign’s Ally for Equality Award on Saturday 20th at the gala held at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago.
The award is presented to a non-LGBT figure who demonstrates outstanding support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

“I long for the day when the ally award will be obsolete because we will be allies together.” Jennifer said during her speech.
Previous winners include New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Vanessa Williams, Charlize Theron, Sally Field, Pink and Scarlett Johansson among others.
Jennifer tweeted some photos that evening, including some notes from her speech, her award, a photo with John Folino Jr, from the Chicago Police Dept and Police advisor to the Chicago Code and a photo with her make up and hair team.
